Report currently gathered by Pinaxonline.com indicates that, the list of activities which will mark the final funeral rites for the late President Jerry John Rawlings has been released.
Information Minister, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah who also doubles as the Caretaker on Wednesday, January 13th, 2021, after a successful meeting with the Funeral Planning Committee, the Anlo Traditional Council, the family announced the details of the funeral activities.
Kojo Oppong Nkrumah took to his official Facebook page and gave an update on the meeting with caption;
”Today at the Accra International Conference Center, on behalf of the Funeral Planning Committee for the late H.E Jerry John Rawlings, we announced various activities to celebrate the life and lay to rest the mortal remains of the former President. Government is appreciative of the cooperation received from all stakeholders as we prepare to give the late President, H.E Jerry John Rawlings, a peaceful rest.”
The activities will start on Friday January 22, 2021 with the main funeral event at the Black Star Square in Accra on Wednesday January 27, 2021. National activities will also commence with a Catholic Requiem Mass on Sunday, January 24 at the Holy Spirit Cathedral and a vigil at the Air Force Officers Mess in Accra.
The late Jerry John Rawlings will be laid in state January 25 and January 26th at the Accra International Conference Centre making way for various groups to pay their last respects. He will also be given a full military burial service on January 27.
The Anlo Traditional Council will also host 2 days of traditional mourning for the departed soldier who hailed from the Anlo land.
He will later be interred at the Military Cemetery in Accra – the government’s designated burial ground for all former Presidents.
Heads of security agencies, leaders of political parties and the general public will have the opportunity to file past the mortal remains of the former President on Monday, January 25.
On Tuesday January 26, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, the Vice President, Vice-President, Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia, former heads of state and heads of constitutional bodies, the Speaker of Parliament and former Speakers will also have the opportunity to pay their respects.
At 3pm on the same day traditional and customary rites will be held at the foyer of the conference centre with the body of the former President still in state.
Present at the press conference were the children of former President Rawlings; Zanetor, Yaa Asantewaa, Amina and Kimathi Agyeman-Rawlings, The Chairman of the Funeral Planning Committee, Ambassador James Victor Gbeho, Colonel Joshua Agbotui, Head of the Agbotui family, Togbi Agbesi Awusi II, the Awadada of the Anlo State, the Chairman of the National Democratic Congress Council of Elders, Alhaji Mahama Iddrisu and Ambassador Yaw Kuma, Acting Director of State Protocol.
