His Excellency, the President of the Republic of Ghana, Nana Akufo-Addo, has been elected as the new chairperson for the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
The ECOWAS Summit which is currently ongoing in Niamey, Niger, saw the President of Ghana elected to the position at its 57th ECOWAS Summit.
Akufo-Addo now takes over as Chairperson from Mahamadou Issoufou, who has held the position since June 2019 and currently President of Niger. Despite the fact that the President has been elevated to a higher position, Akufo-Addo still faces re-election come December 7, 2020.
Akufo-Addo also becomes the 35th Chairperson of the ECOWAS organization and would serve a 1-year-term.
