“He’s a Man of Honour!” President of AFDB, Adeshina Defends Gowon, Says He Didn’t Loot Half of CBN.

Akinwunmi Adeshina, the President of Africa Development Bank, has defended former military Head of State, Retired General Yakubu Gowon stating that the allegations that he looted half of the Central Bank of Nigeria wasn’t true.

Earlier, British MP Tom Tugendhat (Tonbridge and Malling) had taken a swipe at Gowon saying that the latter looted half of the CBN and brought it to London in the 70s.Tugendhat said this during the debate on the petition made for the sanction of the oppressors of #EndSARS protesters.

This allegations caused an outcry on Nigerian social media and Nigerians lambasted the former head of state. However, Adeshina has on Thursday, November 26 said that Gowon is a man of integrity and honour so the public should be wary of false information.

He tweeted;

“Be careful of misinformation! H.E. General Yakubu Gowon, Nigeria’s former Head of State, is a man of great honour, decency, honesty, amazing simplicity, humility and integrity. I know him. A great and admirable elder statesman of Nigeria. His honesty and integrity are impeccable.”

Meanwhile, Nigerians have reacted to Adeshina’s statement, most of which have said Gowon should speak for himself as he’s still very much alive. Some have also supported Adeshina for his statement.

The reactions read;

@Jacksonpbn wrote; “Please allow Gowon to defend himself. He is alive and can simply take a flight to England and sue the MP. Face your job in ADB and don’t get yoked in a controversial matter that can taint you. Thanks!”

@AniuchiA wrote; “This is supposed to be a progressive.There was cricket silence from you when the government was trying to stifle the basic democratic rights of young citizens but the moment they call Gowon a bloody thief (which I do not doubt), you find your voice. Tueh. Shame on you!!!”

@Owuzpleasant wrote; “A great man that arrived in the UK in penury. Queued for sustainnance. Managed to come home with a PhD is now maligned by an ill informed youth.”

@Mydaeju247 wrote; “You were as silent as a needle-drop when several protesters massacred by the Army at the Lekki Toll Gate, but you’re quick to defend a former military dictator who ruled by the gun-barrell and presided over a War in which millions of children & women were killed. Be disguising.”
