Nigerian Politician Arrested For Benefit Fraud

Abidemi Rufai, a Nigerian politician has been arrested in the United States of America for fraudulently claiming unemployment benefits in USA by stealing identities of more than 100 people.

The politician who happens to be an aide to Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun state was apprehended on Friday, 14th May 2021.

In a statement by the US Justice ministry he was said to have stolen more than $350,000 (£246,000) Covid-19 unemployment benefits from the Washington State Employment Security Department.

Mr Rufai, 42, allegedly used the stolen identities of more than 100 Washington residents to file fraudulent claims between March and August last year. The US authorities say more than $288,000 was deposited into a bank account controlled by him.

Mr. Rufai faces 30 years in prison because the allegations against him are connected to a Presidentially declared disaster or emergency like the coronavirus.
