Students from the Ghana School of Hygiene from Korle Bu, Tamale and Ho campuses respectively invaded the premises of the Ministy of Sanitation and Water Resources to demand for their unpaid allowances which have been accumulated over the period of 30 months.

The students reportedly demonstrated against Nana Akufo-Addo’s led administration holding placards with writings such as “Mr. President where is our Allawa”, ”Allawa is our right as health students” and ” We need our Allawa”.

These students gathered at the premises of the ministry with their cooking pots and mattresses, vowing not to leave if nothing is done about their situation. The students disclosed that they were supposed to receive an amount of GHS 12,000 as the accumulated monthly allowance of GHS 400 for the period of 30 months. The leader of the students, Mr. Raymond Anokye disclosed that they have been forced to use this route to demand for their money after exhausting all alternatives.

This is what he had to say; ”It is disheartening knowing what is going on. When we got here on August 6, we were told by the Ministry that a letter hd been dispatched from the Sanitation Ministry to the Ministry of Finance. We were later told that the document had no budget allocated for the payment of the allowances. This shows that both ministries were not sincere to us, because they are reinventing the same story told since 2017. We do not agree to that this time around, we are staying here till we receive the money”.
