A total of fourteen dead bodies has been recovered from a river where a church bus conveying 32 members from a burial they attended plunged in to the Akaeze-Ukwu River in Ivo local government area of Ebonyi state on Friday night, September 18.
Confirming the incident, the Spokesperson of the State Police Command, Loveth Odah disclosed to journalist that 14 bodies have since been recovered. She said that the fourteen bodies comprise of 7 males and 7 females.
She also stated that a female body was recovered immediately after the incident but she’s yet to be identified.
“The female victim was confirmed dead by a medical Doctor on arrival at Dennis Hospital Akaeke in the Area.
Odah added that the bus was a 608-coaster bus with the plate number-UKP 78 XA and about five victims were rescued including the driver, Mr Nwaonu Chinedu.
The driver revealed that the 32 passengers were members of Christ Peculiar Church of Nigeria, Enugu State branch, adding that they were to attend a burial ceremony at Nguzu Edda, Afikpo South LGA of the State.
The corpses of the deceased have since been deposited at Martha Memorial hospital mortuary in Afikpo.
