Nigerians are currently breathing fire after pictures and a video of men of a squad called “NDLEA SWAT” were spotted checking phones and extorting road users.
It was gathered that the NDLEA SWAT is a squad attached to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency and it was allegedly created in 2018. However, in the past few days there have been reports that operatives of the squad have been going about checking the phones of road users and also extorting them.
Veteran musician, Ruggedman took to his Twitter page on Sunday night to share photos of the NDLEA SWAT operatives on the road. He openly questioned the Police, the NDLEA, the Nigerian Senate and the presidency the reason for the latest actions.
“Dear @PoliceNG @PoliceNG_CRU @ndlea_nigeria what is NDLEA SWAT and why are they on the road with guns searching peoples phone? #WhatisNdleaSwat Cc @segalink @NGRSenate @NGRPresident ”
This revelation has sparked outrage from many Nigerians who have also taken to Twitter on Monday, December 21 to demand an explanation. Currently on Nigerian Twitter, the hashtag ‘#NDLEA SWAT’ is trending.
Some reactions read;
“NDLEA SWAT are already stopping young guys, checking their phones and harrasing then again when IGP says they have been trained and will do better, but they’re still using the same modus operandi as SARS, just with different name.
“EFCC is fighting cyber crime on the streets and NDLEA SWAT is searching for drugs in people’s phone..Welcome to Nigeria”
